TRIP REPORT - Jun 24th
Mimbro300 - Matt I. - 07:14am Jul 25, 2008 PT
GTC Grad AC - Mar 2008

Let me start by saying this will not be my typical trip report since I was overwhelmed yesterday in trying to remember what everyone was doing so I could write a good trip report – lol, so I apologize for some lack of details. I’ll have to bring a pad and pencil with me next time.

Let me also start by saying one cannot underestimate the power of the GTC site. The ability to meet with other GTC members is a great thing. EVERYONE, do not even hesitate in reaching out to other members. Perhaps we were lucky, but here’s my story.

My group consisted of my good friend Mike (who I rake over the coals every chance I get – and he does the same with me) and Frank R who was in our GTC class back in Mar 2008. The three of us managed to get-together earlier in the month for a trip out to one of our casinos. In anticipation of our trip yesterday, I posted a notice on Get Togethers and was contact by two really great guys – Doug and Phil.

Much like ordering a meal in Tunica, you never know what you’re going to get and I have to say that I’d play anytime with either of those two guys (hopefully I wasn’t the meal they sent back and they would want to play with me again).

We met around 11:30 outside Brookstone because instead of working out like Dom or Frank, I found an easier way. Brookstone has those $2,000 - $4,000 massage chairs and like two little kids Mike and I sat in them for about 10 minutes and felt totally relaxed. No shoulder, neck or back pain – we were like butter ready to spread out onto the casino.

The casino we chose is not typically known for being packed during the week but for some reason today the tables were jammed. After searching the 12’ tables, three of us squeezed into the table while two others waited for an opening. Mike was SL1 and I was SL2.

From the beginning of the week I felt this was going to be a good week, so I was hoping it would come true. On the short 20 minute flight to the casino, Mike was sitting in the row next to me and he hit me on the side with a magazine and said “What are you thinking about?”. With my eyes shut and a really big GRIN on my face, I’m sure he wanted to know “Who” I was thinking about, so I looked at him and told him “I’m visualizing”. Needless to say we both laughed…

Mike got the dice first and FINALLY, after all of the times I’ve played with him, his 5 hours of practice paid off (only kidding, I’m sure he practiced more than 5 hours). Mike threw the dice wonderfully and hit for a 38 roll. For Frank and Doug, it was a killer to stand on the sidelines in missing a great roll.

One problem I noticed for me as a beginner, it takes a little time to get rolling. But I find the same was also true with my betting. I didn’t make as much as I should have with Mike’s roll because I was stuck in that ‘first roll’ betting conservative mode. I’m not sure if others have encountered this as well, but I have to be more aware of it next time.

Now for my great roll. Like shrinkage on Seinfeld, I had a roll of 2.

As the play progressed, people moved around and we managed to get everyone in position. Unfortunately, we had 5 right handed players so only three were shooting.

Frank handled the dice equally as well and had a good roll and as the dice worked their way around, Mike had another good roll in the high teens.

Now for my next great roll. I made a tremendous 50% improvement and rolled a 3.

Did I say I generally have a hard time getting started. Overall before lunch, everyone was essentially up. Doug didn’t get to shoot from his position, but Frank, Phil and Mike all had decent rolls. Phil took the class in June 2008 and you can tell he was fresh out of the class because his form and throws looked great.

We broke for lunch, got to know one another and hopefully built a great connection for future trips.

We headed back to the table and I relinquish my spot to Phil, Mike was able to grab SL1, Frank was protecting the landing zone, Doug took SR1 but didn’t throw from that location and I took SL3.

Now the fun really begins…

Mike had a good roll in the 20’s, Phil had a roll of about 28, and then it was my turn. When we play together, SL1 usually steps back to allow room for the others. When I shot, SL1 and SL2 both stepped back and I was about to essentially throw from SL2.

As I like to say, even a blind squirrel finds a nut once in a while…

I can’t pinpoint my exact number but it was around 28 to 31 rolls. I didn’t even realize it but some guy on the hook tipped me $100 for all of the money he won.

Again, Frank, Phil, and Mike shot well. Frank actually hit for 5 numbers but none of us had a firepay bet (Frank did get a nice tip from someone who did have it bet). As the dice were working their way around, I felt bad Doug didn’t even have a chance to shoot during the day, so I offered to swap spots with him. I moved into SR1 and the dice came to me. What I will say may not make Dom happy, but in the boredom of practicing in my basement, I’ve been spending separate time practicing with my opposite hand. Surprisingly, I seem to throw it better with my left hand which I view as my weak hand - probably because I don’t over grip. I actually had a good roll but by now, it was time to check out and catch our flight back.

Doug finally did get to shoot but we missed winning some more because he made three points and Mike said he threw the dice great.
All in all, three of us cashed out with 4 digit winnings and the remaining two were at least half-way there.

We had such a great time, we’re planning another trip next week.

THANKS TO FRANK, DOM and ALL GTC INSTRUCTORS who got us here…

Matt
